All of us at AFC Physical Medicine & Chiropractic Centers wish you a happy, healthy Thanksgiving! We hope you enjoy the time with those who matter most and not stress about indulging too much. How you eat on Thanksgiving Day does not determine your health; how you eat the other 364 days of the year does.
Here are some tips for making the special day healthier:
1. Eat breakfast.
Start your day as usual with a healthy breakfast. You may think that skipping breakfast to "save up" calories for the big meal is a good idea, but it rarely works and can lead to overindulging easily.
2. Pitch in and bring a guilt-free dish you can enjoy.
Call your host and offer to bring something. If you discover that one of the dishes is particularly unhealthy, offer to bring your own version so that you won't be as tempted to give in to the less-healthy option.
3. Divide your plate well.
Reserve half your plate for vegetables, one quarter for protein, and the rest with a healthy starch. This way you can still enjoy a variety of Thanksgiving food while getting all of those nutrients!
4. Savor every bite.
It's one of the easiest ways to enjoy your holiday meal without going overboard on calories.
5. Start Thanksgiving with physical activity and stay active.
Like any other day of the year, it's important to stay active. Take a walk early in the day. And after dinner, suggest everyone go out for a neighborhood stroll. We also suggest a fun, classic game of tag football in the afternoon; perfect for the whole crowd!
We hope these tips help you enjoy the special day even more. Happy, healthy Thanksgiving!
